Located in the Springburn Leisure Centre on Kay Street in the Springburn district of Glasgow, the Springburn Museum opened in 2003 but is only a vestige of the former museum which existed between 1986 and 2001. The original was the first independent community museum in the city and told the story of the rise, decline and rebirth of the industrial community of Springburn. It highlighted the importance of railway manufacturing to the area and its place in the global context. Facing financial difficulties, this museum closed in March 2001 and the collections dispersed between other Glasgow museums. However a resurrection came both through a more modest display in the local history section of the Springburn Library (the current Springburn Museum within the Leisure Centre) and the Springburn Virtual Museum, available online.
Exhibits on display include photographs, models, graphics and first hand recollections of one of Glasgow's most important industrial communities. There are also changing exhibits on the current community.
