Giants' Graves

A pair of chambered cairns situated 40m / 130 feet apart in the SE of the island of Arran (North Ayrshire), the Giants' Graves lies ¾ mile (1.2 km) south of Whiting Bay, above the settlement of Largymore. These represent tombs of Neolithic age. Both were excavated in 1902 with finds including pottery sherds, flint knives, leaf-shaped arrowheads and fragments of burnt bone, with a few more finds coming from a further excavations in 1961-62 and 2006. Names have been carved on the stones by visitors, many of some age in finely-defined lettering. The forest surrounding the graves was felled in the late 2000s opening spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde.
