Lion Rock

(The Lion)

A remarkable geological formation situated by the roadside in the southeast of the island of Great Cumbrae, Lion Rock is located a mile (1.5 km) east of Millport. It comprises a dolerite dyke, one of several linear igneous intrusions which cut across the island, but this takes the form of a stalking lion facing inland. It is more than 50m (164 feet) in length, 10m (32 feet) high. An interpretation board is to be found in a roadside car park, which also provides a viewpoint across the Fairlie Roads to the Hunterston Terminal. The rock has gained international exposure in the Hollow Earth books by Carole and John Barrowman.
