Hare Hill Wind Farm

Located 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of New Cumnock (East Ayrshire) is the Hare Hill Wind Farm. The site lies on the rolling slopes around Hare Hill (approx. 590m / 1935 feet) and is 5 miles (8 km) northeast of another older wind farm at Windy Standard (Dumfries and Galloway). This wind farm opened in 2000, having cost £10 million to construct. It comprises twenty Danish-built Vestas V47 turbines, each standing 64m (209 feet) high and capable of generating 650 kW of power, giving a total generation capacity of 13.2 megawatts (MW). It was the first wind farm in the UK to be built without any renewable energy subsidy.

The farm is owned by Scottish Power, a privatised utility which now forms part of a multi-national energy group. The technology used means that the turbines can be controlled remotely from Scottish Power's offices.
