HM Prison Aberdeen

(Craiginches Prison)

HM Prison Aberdeen was located in Torry, overlooking the River Dee a mile (1.5 km) south southeast of the city centre. It served as the local prison for the northeast of Scotland and the Northern Isles. Closed in 2014, it once held remand prisoners, deportation cases and medium term male adults, those prisoners serving up to 4 years, whilst female prisoners are placed in separate accommodation. Built in 1890 and designed to hold 155 offenders, this prison became the location for the last execution of a man in Scotland when Henry "Harry" Burnett died at the hands of the hangman on 15th August 1963, having been convicted of murder.
