Oxgangs

A sizeable public housing estate in Edinburgh, Oxgangs is situated 4 miles (6 km) to the south of the city centre and is located between Morningside to the north and Swanston to the south. The name derives from an Old English term for the amount of land tillable by one ox in a ploughing season, standardised at 15 acres or 6.07 ha. Developed from the mid-1950s on a green-field site, the area included three high-rise blocks, named Allermuir Court, Caerketton Court and Capelaw Court after three of the Pentland Hills, which were built in 1961 but demolished in 2005-06 to be replaced by affordable housing. The area benefits from a primary school, library, three churches and a police station. Right-to-buy legislation has taken a significant number of homes into the private sector.
