Remains of James Watt's Cottage, Kinneil

Located on the Kinneil Estate, just to the east of Bo'ness and immediately to the southwest of Kinneil House. It was here that the pioneering engineer James Watt (1736 - 1819) devised his improved steam engine in 1765. At the time Watt was working closely with Dr. John Roebuck, who lived in Kinneil House. Together they were building an engine for a coal mine run by Roebuck in Bo'ness. An iron cylinder which was part of the engine remains beside the cottage.
