Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch

Linlithgow Loch is a shallow body of water located to the north of the centre of Linlithgow in West Lothian Council Area. Linlithgow Palace overlooks the loch. Extending to 41 ha (101 acres), it has a mean depth of 2.3m (7½ feet) and a maximum depth of 9.2m (30 feet). A popular location for watersports, those involved in sailing here included Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson (b.1968). Run by West Lothian Council, the Low Port Centre provides a centre for canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing as well as sailing, with its facilities shared by the University of Edinburgh Sailing Club and Heriot-Watt University Sailing Club. The loch is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) owing to its plant and bird life. It has been effected by eutrophication, the result of nutrient-rich run off from farmland which has brought algal blooms causing significant deterioration in the recreational and conservation value of the loch. A population of brown trout live alongside rainbow trout stocked by the Forth Area Federation of Anglers, who became responsible for the recreational fishery here in 1962.
