Churchill Barrier No 2

The second of the four Churchill Barriers which connect the islands in the E of the Orkney archipelago, Barrier No. 2 connect the small islands of Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm. It was built across the Weddell Sound in 1940-44 and officially opened the following year. The barrier is 630m (2067 feet) in length and driving across No. 2 in particular is regarded as dangerous in stormy conditions. Divers explore the several blockships which were sunk hereabouts as an earlier protection for Scapa Flow during the First World War. These are exposed at low-tide.
