Clermiston Tower

(Corstorphine Hill Tower)

Located close to the summit of Corstorphine Hill in west Edinburgh, Clermiston Tower was built in 1871 by William Macfie of Dreghorn and Clermiston to commemorate the centenary of the birth of author Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832). The tower was gifted to the people of Edinburgh on the centenary of his death and is now maintained by the City Council. Opened regularly through the summer, the 101 steps up to the cap-house and viewing gallery are worth the climb for the spectacular views across Edinburgh, north to the Firth of Forth and south to the Pentland Hills. The geographical indicator at the top of the tower was the work of noted surveyor and map-maker John Mathieson (1855 - 1945).
