For most of its course, from its source in the Pentland Hills through the city of Edinburgh, the Figgate Burn is named the Braid Burn. It becomes the Figgate at Duddingston Mills, barely a mile (1.5 km) before draining into the Firth of Forth at Portobello, by the site of the old harbour. Northeast of Duddingston it passes the Figgate Pond, before entering Portobello at the western end of that settlement. In 1882, the Portobello authorities forced Edinburgh to take action to clean up the burn, which had acted as an open sewer for parts of the city.
