A district of S Edinburgh, Alnwickhill lies between Liberton and Mortonhall, 3½ miles (5.5 km) south southeast of the city centre, and primarily consists of a private housing estate constructed in the 1970s on land which had been Backsidelee Farm. Housing was extended to the north in the 1990s, forming Netherbank. Stuart Harris (2002) explains that the name 'Alnwickhill' was imported in the 1840s for the predecessor of the present Alnwickhill House, which was rebuilt as the Edinburgh Industrial Home for Fallen Women in 1890. Alnwickhill Water Works opened in 1875 and a Territorial Army Centre was built behind Alnwickhill House in 1968.
