Built in Hope Street (Glasgow) in 1867, the Theatre Royal, as it became known from 1869, was one of the most prestigious theatres of its day. Now used as the base for Scottish Opera, it has had a varied and eventful past, including use as a theatre, studios for Scottish Television and has twice (1879 and 1895) been gutted by fire.
The theatre has served as a location for several films, including The House of Mirth (2000) and Strictly Sinatra (2001).
