Glasgow Bridge

(Jamaica Street Bridge)

Glasgow Bridge carries Bridge Street between Jamaica Street and Eglinton Street over the River Clyde on the Broomielaw. The work of engineers Blyth & Westland, it is 170m (560 feet) in length. Sir William Arrol & Co. was responsible for the foundations.

The first bridge in this location was opened in 1772, having been constructed by William Mylne (1734-90). However, by the early 1830s, traffic had increased to such an extent that a new bridge designed by Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) and built by John Gibb (1776 - 1850) was opened in 1836. By the late 19th century a larger bridge was again required, and a remodelled bridge retaining the basic structure of Telford's bridge was opened in 1899.
