Cailternish

(Cailternis)

A little hammerhead-shaped peninsula extending into the North Ford on the south coast of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Cailternish (Gael: Cailternis) forms the western shore of Oban an Innseanaich a half-mile (0.8 km) east of Claddach Carinish. Recorded on older Ordnance Survey maps as Eilean Steaphain, it is ¾ mile (1.2 km) wide, but only a quarter-mile (0.5 km) deep. The larger peninsula of Liernish lies to the east.
