A 16th-century tower house and estate in Stirling Council Area, Old or Little Sauchie lies 3 miles (5 km), southwest of Stirling. It was built in 1541 by James Erskine with additions in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Battle of Sauchie, also known as the Battle of Sauchieburn, was fought near here on 11th June 1488 between James III and his rebellious nobles. The King's army was defeated and the King was himself murdered at a nearby mill after falling from his horse in flight. To the east is the Howietoun Fish Farm which was established in the 1870s by Sir James Maitland as a pioneering experiment.
