The Witches Stone

(Witches Stane)

Lying by the roadside a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southwest of Spott in East Lothian, the Witches Stone (or Witches Stane) lies close to where Marion Lillie, the Ringwoodie Witch, was burned to death c.1698, one of the last witch-burnings in Scotland. East Lothian had a reputation for trying a large number of witches in the 16th and 17th centuries. This small and otherwise insignificant stone is surrounded by metal railings, and an interpretation plaque has been provided.
