Ardgoil

A publicly-owned estate and physiographic district which forms the eastern part of the Cowal peninsula, between Loch Goil and Loch Long, Ardgoil occupies the peninsula to the east of Lochgoilhead. Once part of the Ardkinglas Estate, which was sold as two separate sections in 1905, this section was purchased by Liberal politician Archibald Cameron Corbett, 1st Baron Rowallan (1856 - 1933), who immediately presented it to the citizens of Glasgow to provide an area of mountain landscape for the purposes of recreation. The land extends to 5970 ha (14,740 acres) and was named Ardgoil by Glasgow Corporation. In 1928-29, the Corporation made sections of the estate available to the Forestry Commission for the planting of trees (the Ardgoil Forest). In 1965 the Forestry Commission took over the management of the entire estate and, two years later, ownership passed to the Secretary of State for Scotland (now the Scottish Government). It is now managed by Forestry and Land Scotland as part of the Argyll Forest Park.
