Robert Spittal's Hospital is situated at No. 54 Spittal Street in the Old Town of Stirling, adjacent to the Darrow Lodging. Robert Spittal grew wealthy as tailor to King James IV (1473 - 1513) and left money to alleviate poverty in Stirling and build 'useful bridges in the neighbourhood'. This building is sometimes referred to as Robert Spittal's House, although it could not have served as his home as it was not built until c.1650. A plaque suggests the hospital was founded in 1530 'for the support of the puir' and it seems likely that it was originally located in the Nether Hospital, which was demolished in 1751. The white-harled B-listed building comprises two storeys with a crow-stepped gable and a broad slate roof. The projecting stair-tower was removed in the 19th C. only to be replaced as part of a restoration in 1959 by Robert Naismith (1916 - 2004), partner to the late Sir Frank Mears (1880 - 1953), when the building was also divided into tenement flats.
