Eagle's Rock

(Creag na h-Iolaire)

A hill with craggy western slopes which overlook the Berriedale Water in E Caithness, Eagle's Rock (Gael: Creag na h-Iolaire) rises to 248m (813 feet) 3 miles (5 km) west southwest of Dunbeath. It was here that HRH Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-42), fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, was killed during World War II when his Sunderland Flying Boat crashed en route from the RAF base at Evanton (Easter Ross) to Iceland. There is a memorial on the eastern slopes of the hill.
