Clach Chairidh

(Clach Biorach)

Located in a field a short distance to the northwest of Edderton in Easter Ross, Clach Chairidh (also known as Clach Biorach) is a Pictish symbol stone. It comprises a slab of red sandstone, some 3.1m (10¼ feet) in height, 1m (3½ feet) wide and 0.45m (1½ feet) in thickness. The stone is decorated on the north side only, with a fish above a double-disc and Z-rod design. It is thought that the stone was erected in Neolithic or the Bronze Age, but decorated in the 5th or 6th C. AD. The Pictish carving on the stone inspired the design for bottles at the nearby Balblair Distillery.
