A modest railway terminus located a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of the centre of Paisley in Renfrewshire, Paisley Canal Station (Gael: Canàl Phàislig) opened in 1885. It was built on a loop of line that avoided Paisley Gilmour Street, the town's principal station, which was congested. The service declined and the station was closed in 1983. Demand brought the reinstatement of a Glasgow-bound line and an unmanned terminal halt was built just to the east of the site of the original station, the former station buildings having been sold. Operated by ScotRail, Paisley Canal remains popular with commuters and is used by around 215,000 people annually (2010). It is preceded by Hawkhead Railway Station, a mile (1.5 km) to the east.
