East Camp Community Enterprise Park

The East Camp Community Enterprise Park lies on the eastern edge of Balivanich in the NW of the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. The East Camp was built as part of RAF Benbecula, with the associated runways still in use as Benbecula Airport immediately to the north. The most significant building is a large concrete blockhouse which controlled the operation of the long-range radar which monitored British airspace from the time of the Cold War. Although the radar heads on South Clettraval (10 miles / 16 km to the north northwest) remain active, these are now remotely-controlled from England. The former control building was stripped and sold off c.2005. This together with the other buildings here are now owned by the East Camp Trust, a social enterprise which has redeveloped these to provide various community facilities, including a music venue, riding centre and a home for Tagsa Uibhist, a charity which provides support for carers, older and vulnerable people throughout the Southern Isles.
