Ranfurly Castle

A ruined three-storey tower house located in trees on the left side of the 17th fairway of the Old Course of Ranfurly golf course, Ranfurly Castle overlooks the valley of the River Gryfe a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southwest of the centre of Bridge of Weir. It was built by the Knox family around 1440, with later additions to the east and south creating a busy courtyard of buildings. The castle was abandoned in 1665. Now a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the thick rubble walls survive to a height of approximately 7m (23 feet).
