Fettes

A small district of N Edinburgh, Fettes lies around Fettes College, between Crewe Toll and Inverleith, 1¼ miles (2 km) north of the city centre. The streets are named for Lord Provost Sir William Fettes (1750 - 1836), who owned the land here but also left money to found the College. Fettes Avenue was built c.1893 with East Fettes Avenue following c.1900.

Edinburgh Division of Police Scotland have their headquarters on Fettes Avenue (built 1971), while opposite is Broughton High School, with its original building here (dating from 1972) demolished in favour of a new private-finance building in 2009.

Areas of greenspace lying to the north of Fettes College where developed from the later years of the 20th C creating an area known as Fettes Village. Flats were built at Rocheid Park off East Fettes Avenue in the late 1980s, further blocks were erected to the west from 1989 to form the Werber development, while the rather more stylish and luxurious flats of the Kimmerghame development, built in the first decade of the 21st C., completes the western spread of this housing next to Crewe Road South.
