Located in a former temporary classroom within the grounds of Leith Walk Primary School on Brunswick Road in Edinburgh, the History of Education Centre (previously known as the Victorian Schoolroom) is situated a half-mile (1 km) northeast of the city centre. It represents a fully-functioning classroom from c.1900, together with a small museum featuring household objects from bygone days. The History of Education Centre is a charity, founded in 1986, and its work is sustained by enthusiastic volunteers. While not open to individuals, school groups can take part in lessons, experiencing the harsh regime of the time, and the Centre welcomes visits from clubs, societies and other groups.
The Victorian Schoolroom was first established on the top floor of St Mary's Primary School in East London Street, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) west of its current location, but that venue was lost as the school needed space to expand. It moved to Brunswick Road in 2008.
