Lochmaddy Sheriff Court

One of Scotland's smallest and most remote court houses, Lochmaddy Sheriff Court is located in the village of Lochmaddy on the east coast of North Uist. Now operated by the Scottish Court Service, the court has jurisdiction over the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides, principally the islands of Berneray, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay, Barra and Vatersay. Dates from 1875, with an extension from 1892, this represents a large and solid building in a modest and scattered village, thus gaining considerable prominence. Equally prominent nearby is the Old Courthouse, dating from 1827, which now offers bed and breakfast accommodation. After the completion of the new court, this old building continued to operate as a prison until 1891 and still features a cells and a walled exercise yard.
