The Mosaic Mackerel is a public sculpture lying on the rocky seashore of Rubh' a' Choire a short walk from the Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre in North Uist, which had commissioned the work from mosaic artist Rosalind Wates. Created in 1996 as part of a year-long celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of naturalist William MacGillivray (1796 - 1852), the sculpture is 5m (16 feet) in length and is intended to reflect the importance of fishing to the economy and heritage of the islands. It is composed of materials found nearby on the shore, including rock fragments, pebbles, mussel shells and worn shards of coloured glass.
