A prominent landmark on the ridge between Linlithgow and Bo'ness, the Hope Monument in located within West Lothian, close to the border with Falkirk. It was erected in 1859 as a memorial to Brigadier Adrian Hope, who was killed on the 15th April 1858 while attacking Fort Rooeah (Roodamow) in Oude during the Indian Mutiny and lies buried in Westminster Abbey. The monument comprises an octagonal Gothic three-stage tower, constructed in sandstone ashlar, on a stepped pedestal. The third stage is a spire, topped by a decorative finial, while a plaque extols Hope's life and virtues. The monument was B-listed in 1971.
