Torphin Hill

Torphin Hill is a summit, much denuded by quarrying, that represents a foothill of the Pentland Hills in the SW of the City of Edinburgh. It rises to around 260m (853 feet), as northeastern extension of Warklaw Hill, to the northwest of Torduff Reservoir and a half-mile (1 km) south southeast of Juniper Green. Quarrying began here in the later 18th C. but the present substantial quarry was begun in the 1890s, extracting dolerite (whinstone) for road-metal, and was subsequently extended. The quarry was disused by 1949. What remains of the hill is the site of Torphin Hill Golf Club.
