A sizeable collection of wind turbines in the N of the Scottish Borders, Fallago Rig Wind Farm is located on land owned by the Roxburghe Estates in the Lammermuir Hills, 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Gifford and 8 miles (13 km) north northeast of Lauder. It was constructed 2011-13, after a six-year campaign of opposition supported by environmentalist Professor David Bellamy (1933 - 2019) was dismissed by the Court of Session. The wind farm was built and is operated by EDF Energy Renewables, with ownership now shared with city investment funds. The site comprises 48 Vestas V90 turbines, each rated at 3 MW, giving a total installed capacity of 144 MW of power. The wind farm was officially opened on the 22nd July 2013 by Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing (b.1957), in the presence of landowner Guy Innes-Ker, the 10th Duke of Roxburghe (b.1954). A sum of £240,000 is donated to the local community in each year that the wind farm is operational. In 2014, the communications giant BT signed an agreement to purchase 50% of the power produced by Fallago Rig to meet the entire electricity needs of its Scottish operations.
