Incongruously situated between 18th and 19th C. stone-built tenement blocks on the east side of Causewayside in Edinburgh, the former Southern Motors Garage (later Causewayside Service Station) is an International-style construction in white concrete, with Art Deco touches. Built in 1933, this was one of the earlier works of Basil Spence (1907-76) when he worked in partnership with William Kininmonth (1904-88). The garage forecourt nestles under a glass-fronted upper floor which features structural fins which provide convenient surfaces for signage. The building fell from use as a petrol station in the 1990s as it was proving too small for modern requirements and is now a Majestic Wine warehouse. It was B-listed in 1990.
