Tom a' Chaisteil

(Tom na Chaistel)

A modest hill marked by a prominent monument in SW Perth and Kinross, Tom a' Chaisteil (or incorrectly Tom na Chaistel) rises to around 130m (426 feet) between the A85 Trunk Road and the River Earn, 2½ miles (4 km) west of Crieff. On its summit is Sir David Baird's Monument and a much-denuded hill-fort which later became a stronghold of the Earls of Strathearn. It is said, that while undertaking the groundworks for Baird's Monument, the workmen uncovered skeletal remains, ornaments and gold coins. These were thought to be the remains of Agnes Comyn, Countess of Strathearn, who conspired to overthrow Robert the Bruce in 1320 and was confined to the castle which once stood here for the rest of her life.
