A compact toy-fort of a mansion situated within a private estate on the west coast of Argyll and Bute, Gallanach Castle lies 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Oban. This two-storey house was built 1814-17 on the site of an earlier house for the MacDougall family by the architect William Burn (1789 - 1870), although his design was not completed and the three-storey block to the rear was the work of John James Burnet (1857 - 1938) in 1903. The principal feature of the interior is a two-storey oval saloon, which includes a staircase still retaining the original cast-iron balusters and mahogany hand-rail. Original marble chimney-pieces survive in a fine drawing room and dining room which mirror each other on either side of the entrance hall. The property was B-listed in 1971.
Gallanach is a family run estate which has been owned by the MacDougalls of Gallanach since 1641. Today, the Estate combines its livestock farming with letting holiday accommodation within what was the staff quarters of the house, weddings and other events.
