A relatively plain three-storey folly at the entrance to Glen Tanar, the Tower of Ess is located next to the Bridge o' Ess, 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Aboyne. This square tower was built in the later 19th C. and was probably the work of George Truefitt, the favoured architect of Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, who was the Laird of the Glen Tanar Estate. It uses two contrasting colours of stone; the lower level is of dark grey granite, while the upper levels are of pink granite. The parapet is corbelled out, with a peculiar round turret, featuring a bell-shaped roof, to the southeast corner. The structure was B-listed in 2000.
