Black Hill

A modest summit in The Machars of Galloway, Black Hill rises to approximately 90m (295 feet) immediately to the north of the A75 Trunk Road, 4¾ miles (7.5 km) east northeast of Glenluce. Black Hill is one of the smaller of number of drumlins which were deposited below an ice sheet that once covered this area and is aligned NNE-SSW indicating the direction of ice flow. Confusingly, there are several other nearby drumlins also called Black Hill; 2 miles (3 km) to the north northeast, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the west southwest, 7½ miles (12 km) to the east northeast and 8 miles (13 km) to the east, together with the Black Hill of Barmore only 1¼ miles (2 km) to the north northeast.
