Ballochbuie Purchase Cairn

A substantial cairn on the northern slopes of Craig Doin in Aberdeenshire, the Ballochbuie Purchase Cairn commemorates the purchase of the Ballochbuie Forest by Queen Victoria on 15th May 1878, to protect its trees and provide a significant extension to her Balmoral Estate. The Cairn overlooks this remnant of the ancient Caledonian Forest, which once covered much of Scotland, and is now classified as a Special Area of Conservation.
