A suburban district of Edinburgh located 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of the city centre, Craiglockhart lies between the A 70 Lanark Road and the Craiglockhart Hills. Consisting principally of pre- and post-war private bungalows, the area developed around the 12th Century Craiglockhart Tower on the lands of the Lockhart family. To the east, on the flanks of Wester Craiglockhart Hill, is the Craiglockhart Campus of Napier University. The mid-18th Century Redhall House, with its pedimented frontage and porch supported on Ionic columns, was built for George Inglis, who owned a paper mill at Auchendinny. Craiglockhart House (1830) is a Tudor-Gothic pile in Craiglockhart Dell Road, built by the noted medic Professor Alexander Monro (Tertius; 1773 - 1859). The Craiglockhart Sports Centre, in 'Happy Valley', hosts international tennis competitions. Craiglockhart Station opened on the Southern Suburban Railway in 1887 but closed in 1962.
