The Dalkeith Solar Meadow was developed at a cost of £1.2 million by Edinburgh College at their Dalkeith Campus at Hardengreen in Midlothian, occupying a south-facing site immediately to the east of Eskbank Railway Station. Opened in 2013 by local MSP Colin Beattie, this was Scotland's first solar farm. Designed and installed by SSE Energy Solutions, it occupies a 2 ha / 5 acre site and comprises more than 2500 Chinese-made solar panels, arranged in 18 rows, with each panel producing up to 245 watts of power, giving the farm a peak output of 0.6 MW. The Solar Meadow will generate around 560,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. The facility will also serve as an 'outdoor classroom' for engineering students who will monitor the performance of the panels and it will also provide the opportunity to study biodiversity around solar installations.
