A northern suburb of Edinburgh, Warriston lies on the Water of Leith to the east of Inverleith, a mile (1.5 km) north of the city centre. Warriston Crematorium, once East Warriston House (1808), stands alongside Warriston Cemetery (1843) which was the burial place of the surgeon Sir James Young Simpson (1811-70) and the artist Horatio McCulloch (1805-67).
