A little summit in The Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Barney Hill rises to just beyond 60m (196 feet) immediately to the southeast of Thorny Hill, a half-mile (1 km) south of Kirkcowan. This is a drumlin, one of a number hereabouts, with its principal axis aligned NNW-SSE suggesting the direction of flow of an ancient ice sheet. This hill should not be confused with another Barney Hill located 5 miles (8 km) to the east southeast, also lying next to a Thorny Hill.
