Craufurd Monument

(Craufuird Monument, Byne Hill Monument)

A much-weathered obelisk on the southwestern slopes of Byne Hill in South Ayrshire, the Craufurd (or Craufuird) Monument is located 2¼ miles (3.5 km) south southwest of Girvan, above Ardmillan House. It was erected in memory of Major Archibald Clifford Blackwell Craufurd (or Craufuird) of Ardmillan (1776 - 1856) who served in the British Army in India and South Africa, taking part in the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1795. His son was the noted jurist James Craufurd, Lord Ardmillan (1805-76). The monument is now in very poor condition.
