A substantial heritage tree in SW Glasgow, the Darnley Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus, but usually referred to as a Plane tree in Scotland) lies at the corner of Nitshill Road and Kennishead Road, 5½ miles (9 km) southwest of the city centre. It is said that Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-67) and his wife Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87) sat beneath this tree as she nursed him back to health as they stayed nearby at Crookston Castle. Despite its undoubted age, it seems unlikely that this tree is quite old enough to be the one identified with the story.
