Alloa Railway Station

(Alamhagh)

Alloa Railway Station is the terminus of a line which extends from Glasgow via Croy and Stirling. Known as Alamhagh in Gaelic, this station is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east of the centre of Alloa in Clackmannanshire. Peak services also run to Edinburgh via Falkirk Grahamston. Opened on 15th May 2008, it is operated by ScotRail. Alloa Railway Station is unstaffed and is used by 390,072 passengers per annum (2009-10), well in excess of predictions. It is preceded by Stirling Railway Station, 5½ miles (9 km) to the west.

Alloa's original railway station opened on the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway in 1850, a short distance to the west of the present station. Initially passengers had cross the River Forth via a ferry to reach Stirling. Within a year a bridge was constructed to link the line to Stirling Railway Station. With dwindling passenger numbers, Alloa Station was a victim of rail rationalisation and closed in 1968. Thereafter the line was used by freight alone, primarily coal trains, until c.1980 when it closed completely. The site of this original station was redeveloped as Alloa Leisure Bowl.
