Dalry Railway Station

(Dail Fhraoich)

A railway station on the Ayrshire Coast Line, Dalry (known in Gaelic as Dail Fhraoich) is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east southeast of the village of the same name in North Ayrshire. Opened in 1840 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, but by 1905 had grown into a substantial interchange with four platforms as junctions were developed to the north and south. Railway rationalisation brought the closure of both of these junction and redesign of the station around the present two platforms in the 1980s. It is now operated by ScotRail, is unstaffed but has seen a growth in passenger numbers from 160,944 per annum (2010) to 204,000 in 2016. There is an associated park-and-ride facility. Dalry is preceded by Glengarnock, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the northeast, and followed by Kilwinning Railway Station, 3½ miles (5.5 km) to the south.
