Exhibition Centre Railway Station

(Finnieston Railway Station, Stobcross Railway Station, Ionad Taisbeanaidh)

Exhibition Centre Railway Station (referred to in Gaelic as Ionad Taisbeanaidh) is situated on the Argyle Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northwest of Anderston and a similar distance northwest of Finnieston in Glasgow City. Today is serves the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and the SSE Hydro arena, but it opened in 1894 as Stobcross Railway Station on the Glasgow Central Railway, located at the eastern end of a large railway yard which allowed trans-shipment of goods from the former Queen's Dock. Within two years it was also to be used by the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway, with services through to Clydebank. Between 1979 and 1986, it was renamed Finnieston Railway Station.

Now operated by ScotRail, Exhibition Centre Railway Station is staffed part-time and was used by 1,054,236 passengers in the year 2009-10, which rose steadily to >>> 1,891,500 passengers by 2016-17. It is preceded by Anderston Railway Station, a half-mile (1 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Partick, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the west northwest. The station was closed for several months following flooding when the River Kelvin burst its banks in 1994 and water flowed through disused tunnels to here and on to the Low Level Station at Glasgow Central.
