Uphall Railway Station

(Ubhalaidh)

A railway station in West Lothian, Uphall (known in Gaelic as Ubhalaidh) lies on the North Clyde Line, next to the M8 motorway, a half-mile (1 km) south southeast of Uphall. A station opened here on the Edinburgh-Bathgate Railway in 1849 and became a hub for branch lines which served oil shale mines. In the later 19th C., a settlement (also known as Uphall Station) grew up around the railway station to serve the adjacent Uphall Oil Works. Both this station and the line closed in 1959 as the oil shale industry declined. However British Rail re-established the line and a new station opened in 1986. Now operated by ScotRail, Uphall Railway Station is unstaffed and is used by more than 600,000 passengers each year (2017), a substantial increase on the 226,664 people who used the station in 2010. It is preceded by Edinburgh Park Railway Station, 7½ miles (12 km) to the east, and followed by Livingston North, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the southwest.
