A large railway yard in Glasgow which services the West Coast Main Line, Polmadie Depot is located 2 miles (3 km) south southeast of the city centre and a mile (1.6 km) west northwest of Rutherglen (South Lanarkshire). It provides sidings for stabling engines and rolling stock together with massive sheds for maintenance. The depot includes a drivers' depot for Virgin Trains and is one of five traincare centres on the West Coast Main Line managed by Alstom Transport, cleaning and maintaining Virgin's fleet of electric and diesel trains.
Polmadie Shed was opened in 1875 by the Caledonian Railway Company, and subsequently rebuilt and extended for the maintenance of steam engines and rolling stock. With the demise of steam, the facility closed in 1967 and the site was redeveloped as a diesel and electric traction maintenance depot (known as the Polmadie Motive Power Depot). Later still, with the development of integrated multiple-unit trains, it became known as the Polmadie Traction and Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot.
