Baillieston Interchange

Scotland's most complex motorway junction, the Baillieston Interchange lies between Crosshill and Bargeddie, 6 miles (10 km) east of the centre of Glasgow. It links the M8 (Glasgow - Edinburgh) and M73 (Moodiesburn - Birkenshaw) motorways with the A89 and A8 roads. Strategically, this links the main route north from England with the east-west transport arteries which cross the Midland Valley of Scotland. Originally there was a roundabout here, but construction of this complex four-level grade-separated junction, designed by engineers Babtie, Shaw & Morton, began in 1973. It was not completed until 1980 at a cost of £8.9 million and, long with the completed M8 was officially opened in April of that year by George Younger (1931 - 2003), the Secretary of State for Scotland. Baillieston Interchange became less busy from 2011, when the M74 extension routed traffic from the south into Glasgow along the southern bank of the River Clyde. Its geometry was modified as part of the building of the M8 'missing link' which replaced the last non-motorway section of the Glasgow-Edinburgh link in 2017.
