Nethermains Industrial Estate

An old and rather under-utilised industrial estate on the southern margin of Kilwinning in North Ayrshire, Nethermains Industrial Estate lies to the north of the A78 trunk road, a half-mile (1 km) south southeast of the town centre. It was developed by the Irvine Development Corporation in the early 1970s on the site of the former Eglinton Iron Works which had closed in 1926. Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton (1812-61), opened the works with eight blast furnaces in 1846. The plant was designed and operated by William and James Baird of Gartsherrie, extended to 28.3 ha (70 acres), employed over a thousand men at its peak and produced up to 100,000 tons of iron annually.
